Levels of clarification your document may need
Just as writers must consider their audience, successful editing reflects an editor's ability to understand who will read the document (the target audience), and how and why someone will use the document. Such awareness influences all good editorial decisions at all levels of editing.
Different documents require different editing levels. Good editors strive to make a document correct, functional, and efficient through basic copyediting and proofreading. This may require editing at a more comprehensive level, as well as a discussion or iterative process with the author(s).
